[she exhales, and then sits up, staring at the door.
She doesn't know who it was but. she's still feeling the weight of the past week.
... But slowly, she forces herself up and opens the door. Without the barghest possessing her, it's much more apparently obvious how exhausted and frail she looks after that misadventure.]
[look she's. just not sure that she believes it. At the very least, she's going to blame herself. But she sits on her bed, offering the space next to her for him]
[ owain takes the seat next to her, turning slightly so that she's in view ]
For a little backstory, many years before I was even born, my country, Ylisse, was at war with our neighbor, Plegia. This war was started by my great-uncle, because he could not accept that the people of Plegia chose to worship the Fell Dragon, Grima, instead of the Holy Dragon, Naga. The war dragged on, depleting the army of most of the soldiers. As a result, he chose to conscript the common people of Ylisse, depriving our land of farmers. These conscripts, with little to no training, fell in battle, further depriving us of people capable of feeding our people. Our country was quick to fall into poverty and famine.
It would have been the end to us, were it not for my great-uncle's death. Upon his death, my Aunt Emmeryn became the new Exalt and her first action was to end the war with Plegia. She brokered an uneasy peace and permanently decreased the size of the army. However, Plegia, under the rule of King Gangrel, wanted the war to continue. He ordered raids into the villages at our border, trying to provoke another war. The army couldn't protect everyone, so my Uncle Chrom decided to create a militia group to protect those who needed it. He called this group the Shepherds.
One day, while patrolling along the border, Uncle Chrom, along with my mother and Gerome's father, Uncle Frederick, found someone passed out in a field. She was rather strange, she had no memory of where she came from. All she knew was that her name was Robin. Uncle Chrom is someone known for his trust of anybody he came across. There were often times he would recruit an enemy to join the Shepherds during the middle of a battle, so it was no surprise for him to instantly befriend Robin. She was, in no uncertain terms, brilliant. A skilled tactician and fighter, she very quickly became indispensable and became not only my uncle's left hand, but his closest friend. [ a small laugh ] In fact, many people wondered why Uncle Chrom didn't marry Robin instead of Cynthia's mother, Aunt Sumia.
Eventually, Plegia grew tired with waiting. They acted, causing my Aunt Emmeryn to die and Uncle Chrom to ascend the throne and become the new Exalt of Ylisse. Once again, our two countries were at war, but upon the defeat of King Gangrel, peace came again and life could continue as before. For a time, we were all happy. Though, that peace would not last. Validar, who became the leader of Plegia following the death of Gangrel, invited Uncle Chrom and Robin to the Dragon's Table. Validar, as it turned out, was also the leader of the Grimleal, people who worshiped Grima. It was there, that everything changed.
[ a beat of silence ]
They were invited there so Validar could resurrect Grima. They defeated Validar, and seemed to foil his plans. Except, that wasn't the case. You see, unbeknownst to both of them, Robin was to be the Avatar for Grima. At the Dragon's Table, Robin's consciousness was completely taken over by Grima and it was there that my Uncle Chrom was killed by his friend.
I've told you the rest. Grima rises and lays siege to the land, eventually leaving my friends and I with no choice but to return to the past.
Even after figuring out what caused Uncle Chrom to die in our future, he... never lost faith in Robin. No matter what, Uncle Chrom always trusted Robin. Together, they came up with an idea to fake Uncle Chrom's death at the Dragon's Table when the time came for that to happen once more. Grima still rose, but Robin maintained herself... Mostly because the Grima from our time came to the past along with us and offered a new vessel for Grima to inhabit.
At the end, Robin sacrificed herself, as Grima could only be slain by itself. She made the final blow, killing both Grima and herself at the same time.
[she's quiet. It's still a lot, but she's left with the worry that-- what if that wasn't what happened there. The barghest became her. it took on her characteristics, and her body.
she'd thought she was both its vessel and herself.
was that the same here? and what would he say if he knew that?
she folds her hands in her lap. her knuckles are white]
... I tried to frame you. Specifically because I thought I would manipulate Akira into telling the seeker to investigate you. I knew he was already suspicious of you, and Barghest used that to its advantage.
[she hasn't moved, but she definitely isn't looking at him.]
... That should at least make you suspicious of me, and my motivations.
Perhaps, I can assure you if Uncle Frederick were here, he and Gerome would be sure to keep both me and Cynthia away from you. But I still consider you one of my closest friends here.

I'm very sorry, Owain.

Grima had risen again.

All the information I knew, even though I wanted to keep it secret, it got used. Worse, it could happen to me again, if we kill any of the monsters.

The same could be said about me, about Gerome, about any of us.
